Burnley has reportedly identified Chelsea legend Frank Lampard as a potential replacement for Vincent Kompany, who recently left the club to become manager of Bayern Munich. Lampard, who has been out of work since his interim stint at Chelsea ended last summer, has emerged as a top candidate for the position.

Kompany’s departure this week has left a managerial vacancy at Turf Moor, prompting Burnley to appoint ex-Premier League star Craig Bellamy as the acting manager. Bellamy, assisted by Mike Jackson, will hold the fort until a permanent successor is found.

The Athletic reports that Lampard, who enjoyed a stellar playing career and has managed both Chelsea and Everton, is now being considered for the role. Despite his mixed managerial record, his name carries significant weight in English football.

Steve Cooper was also in the running for the job but has recently withdrawn from contention. This development has left the door open for Lampard, who has been unemployed since his interim role at Chelsea concluded in April 2023 following Graham Potter’s dismissal.

Lampard’s managerial journey began at Derby County, where he led the team to the Championship playoff final in 2019. He then took over at Chelsea, guiding the club to a top-four finish and an FA Cup final before being sacked in January 2021. His subsequent spell at Everton lasted just a year, ending in January 2023.

Burnley, who finished 18th in the Premier League this season and were relegated to the Championship, are keen to make a swift return to the top flight. The club’s chiefs are reportedly considering Lampard as the ideal candidate to spearhead this challenge.

In related football news, Jose Mourinho is rumored to be closing in on a managerial role with a European giant, and Premier League stars are reportedly considering a strike over the Club World Cup schedule. Meanwhile, Manchester United coach has revealed details about Jadon Sancho's refusal to apologize to Erik ten Hag, leading to his exile and potential transfer to Borussia Dortmund.
