Klopp to leave Liverpool at end of season
Liverpool manager Jürgen Klopp has confirmed that he will leave the club at the end of the current season, ending his seven-year spell at Anfield.
The German coach, who led the Reds to their first Premier League title in 30 years and their sixth Champions League trophy, said he had informed the club's owners, Fenway Sports Group, of his decision earlier this week.
"It was not an easy decision, but I feel it is the right one for me and for the club," Klopp said in a statement. "I have had the most amazing time here, working with this incredible group of players, staff and fans. We have achieved so much together, and I will always be grateful for the memories we have made."
Klopp, who joined Liverpool in October 2015, has won 220 of his 364 games in charge, with a win percentage of 60.4%. He has also guided the club to the FIFA Club World Cup, the UEFA Super Cup and the FA Cup final.
However, his final season has been marred by injuries, poor form and the impact of the Covid-19 pandemic, which has prevented fans from attending matches. Liverpool are currently fourth in the Premier League, 12 points behind leaders Manchester City, and face a tough challenge to qualify for next season's Champions League.
Klopp said he had no plans to take another job in the near future, and wanted to take a break from football to spend time with his family. He also thanked the club's owners, his staff, his players and the supporters for their support and trust.
"I want to say a huge thank you to everyone at Liverpool for making me feel so welcome and at home from day one. It has been an honour and a privilege to be your manager," he said. "I also want to thank the fans for their incredible passion and loyalty. You are the heart and soul of this club, and I will always love you."
He added: "I hope you will understand and respect my decision, and I hope you will continue to support the team until the end of the season and beyond. We still have a lot to play for, and I will give everything I have to finish the season on a high note. You'll never walk alone."
