Manchester United's potential move to dismiss manager Erik ten Hag has become more complex due to a clause in his contract, reports indicate. The Dutchman, who has secured two trophies in two seasons, saw his future with the Red Devils questioned after a lackluster 2023/24 season, where the team finished eighth—its worst-ever Premier League performance.

Despite the underwhelming league campaign, Ten Hag led United to a surprise FA Cup final victory against arch-rivals Manchester City on Saturday. This win has complicated the club's decision-making process regarding his dismissal. According to The Times, if United proceed with firing Ten Hag, they will now have to pay a higher compensation fee. This increase is due to the FA Cup win, which also secured the club's qualification for the Europa League. Had United lost the final, the compensation fee would have been lower due to a clause tied to European participation.

Ten Hag, who has a year remaining on his contract, has expressed a desire for the club to make a swift decision about his future. He has reportedly received offers from other clubs but remains focused on his role at Old Trafford until an official decision is made.

United will review Ten Hag's position as part of their end-of-season assessment, with key figures such as Sir Jim Ratcliffe, Avram Glazer, Sir Dave Brailsford, and Jason Wilcox involved in the decision. Speculation about potential replacements has been rife, with names like Thomas Tuchel and Roberto De Zerbi mentioned. However, former coach Kieran McKenna, currently with Ipswich Town, is expected to stay despite links to a return.

In the meantime, the club continues to navigate through managerial uncertainties as they prepare for the upcoming season and potential summer transfer activities.
