Alan Shearer has lauded the performance of Chelsea striker Nicolas Jackson, who scored his 17th goal of the season during the weekend’s victory against Nottingham Forest. The 22-year-old forward, signed for £30 million from Villarreal last summer, has made an immediate impact in his debut season in England.

Despite missing almost a month of action due to representing Senegal at the Africa Cup of Nations, Jackson has played over 3600 minutes in all competitions for Chelsea. Shearer acknowledges the challenges faced by Jackson in adapting to a new country and league, making his goal tally even more impressive.

Shearer commented on “The Rest is Football” podcast, stating that Jackson’s heavy workload has been unfair, considering his raw talent. Shearer suggests that a rotational approach would have been beneficial for the young striker’s development.

While Jackson’s finishing needs improvement, his off-the-ball movement and pace have been commendable. Chelsea’s plan was for him to adapt gradually, but circumstances thrust him into a crucial role as the Blues’ primary striker. His goal against Nottingham Forest elevated him above Didier Drogba’s first-season tally at Chelsea.

As the summer transfer window approaches, Chelsea’s priority is to sign a new striker. If achieved, reducing Jackson’s minutes in the short term could lead to long-term gains. Despite his accomplishments, Jackson remains focused on further growth in a Chelsea shirt.
